SAIL prepares high school students to assume leadership roles within the Foundation, their schools, and the community as well as prepare AnBryce students for college. It is our hope that the skills developed through the program are translated into future success. Students participate in workshops that cover everything from resume writing and preparing for job interviews to recognizing personal leadership qualities and capitalizing on those qualities to be successful.
The Foundation provides opportunities for SAIL students to demonstrate their leadership and interpersonal skills during the summer through the Pillors of Excellence Summer Internship Program and the Staff Training Enrichment Program (STEP). Participants gain invaluable work experience and acquire essential skills that can be used in life after high school.
The Pillors of Excellence Summer Internship Program (PESIP) began in 2004 under the leadership of the late Brenda Pillors, Ph.D., an AnBryce Foundation Board member. Ms. Pillors offered internship opportunities on Capitol Hill, including office training and work experience, to high school students who regularly participated in AnBryce Foundation programs.
The program’s namesake formerly served as Chief of Staff to former Congressman Edolphus Towns (D-NY) and as Legislative Director for the late Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm (D-NY). Dr. Pillors’ passion for mentoring young people and public service was unsurpassed. She was an incredible person whose generosity and care for others knew no bounds. Dr. Pillors passed away suddenly in 2005. Yet, her legacy continues through the internship program.
PESIP has expanded to include valuable and practical internship opportunities in the arts, philanthropy and education. The program is now named in Dr. Pillors’ honor. Interns are placed in professional environments and supervised by workplace professionals.
Participation in Student Adventures in Leadership (SAIL) is mandatory for all students who want to be considered for an internship and as a STEP at Camp Dogwood.
